CoCalc Subscriptions and Pricing (prices last updated August 2019)

Initially, you start using CoCalc under a free trial plan in order to test out the service. If CoCalc works out for you, please subscribe to one of the personal plans or course packages. Any subscription or plan awards you with a certain set of quota upgrades, which you can apply to your projects.

To subscribe or purchase a plan, you sign into CoCalc and open the billing tab in account settings. Once you subscribe, you'll get the option "Hide free warnings" in account preferences to remove the red trial banner. You can see a summary of upgrades in the upgrades tab.

Listed prices are in US dollars. When charging in local currency, the prices are converted into local currency using the conversion rates published by leading financial institutions.

Projects

Your work on CoCalc happens inside one or more projects. They form your personal workspaces, where you privately store your files, computational worksheets, and data. You typically run computations through a web browser, either via a Sage Worksheet, Jupyter Notebook, or by executing a program in a terminal. You can also invite collaborators to work with you inside a project, and you can explicitly make files or directories publicly available to everybody.
 

Shared resources

Each project runs on a server, where it shares disk space, CPU, and RAM with other projects. Initially, you work in a trial project, which runs with default quotas on heavily used machines that are rebooted frequently. Upgrading to "member hosting" moves your project to a machine with higher-quality hosting and less competition for resources.
 

Quota upgrades

By purchasing one or more of our subscriptions or plans, you receive a certain amount of quota upgrades. Use these upgrades to improve hosting quality, enable internet access from within a project or increase quotas for CPU and RAM in order to work on larger problems and do more computations simultaneously. On top of that, your support questions are prioritized.
  • These upgrades are applied on top of the project's free quotas.
  • You can upgrade the quotas up to the total amount given by your subscription(s) and the upper limits per project.
  • Project collaborators can collectively contribute to the same project, in order to increase the quotas of their common project — these contributions add together to benefit all project collaborators equally.
  • You may also purchase any plans more than once, in order to increase the total amount of upgrades available to you.

Personal subscriptions

Personal subscriptions award you with upgrades for project quotas. They automatically renew after each period and you can cancel at any time.

Once such upgrades are added to your account, you can distribute them to your own projects or other projects where you are a collaborator — everyone using an upgraded project benefits.

Quota upgrades can be added or removed at any time – move them between your projects as often as you like.

 
For highly intensive workloads you can also purchase Dedicated resources.

Course packages

You can teach a course on CoCalc. Each student works in their own project, while you oversee everyone and track everyone's progress. CoCalc's real-time collaboration makes it easy to help students directly where they work.

Payment options

  • You or your institution pays for one or more course plans. You distribute the quota upgrades to all projects of the course via the configuration frame of the course management file. Course packages start immediately after purchase, last for the indicated period, and do not auto-renew when they end.
  • Students pay a one-time fee. In the configuration frame of the course management file, you opt to require all students to pay a one-time $14 fee to upgrade their projects.

Basic, Standard or Premium?

Our basic plan works well for cases where you are only doing small computations in a single notebook/worksheet or just need internet access and better hosting uptime.

However, we find that many data and computational science courses run better with the additional RAM and CPU found in the standard or premium plans.

Custom Course Plans

In addition to the plans listed on this page, we offer the following on a custom basis:

  • start on a specified date after payment
  • customized duration
  • customized number of students
  • bundle several courses with different start dates
  • transfer upgrades from purchasing account to course administrator account

Dedicated VMsbeta

A Dedicated VM is a specific node in the cluster, which solely hosts one or more of your projects. This allows you to run much larger workloads with consistent performance, because no resources are shared with other projects. The usual quota limitations do not apply and you can also pay for additional disk space attached to individual projects.
 
To get started, please contact us at help@cocalc.com. We will work out the actual requirements with you and set everything up. The list of dedicated VM options below are just examples; we can create VM's with almost any configuration up to 1.4 terabyte of RAM and 96 vCPU's.
